Early successes helped the company (which changed its name to Nike in 1978) to develop itself among athletes. Knight and Bowerman, one of Nike’s most famous shoes, launched the Cortez in 1972. Designed to be lighter and more durable than other boots, the Cortez has acquired a new concept for its full-length EVA cushioned midsole, providing unprecedented support and shock resistance to athletes.
One influential invention of this time was the Air-Sole model, which featured two air-filled bags in the midsole to withstand shocks. It debuted in 1978 on the Air Tailwind pair, but Nike continued to develop the design and Zoom Air cushioning was introduced in 1995, a feature that continues in today’s Air Zoom shoes. This cushioning approach has provided decades of superior bounce and sensitivity to other materials.
Nike’s Advanced Upper Constructions:
Nike has grown exponentially since the 1970s but has preserved its sporting hegemony as it extends into other sports. In the running industry, part of this popularity is due to creative upper designs that especially benefit runners. Some Nikes use an upper fly knit where in some parts of the shoe a lightweight yarn is tightly woven and in others loosely woven.
The loose weave helps the shoe to stretch with your foot for greater comfort, and the tight weave provides support where it is required in key areas. Flywire, another upper technology, uses a series of cables to tightly match your midfoot to connect the laces of a shoe and loop under the knee. Most recently, Nike released its ‘Vaporwave’ material on the Vaporfly Next percent and Zoom Fly 3. It is a blend of TPU and nylon which is thinner than Fly knit and also contains no moisture.
Several brands sell woven mesh styles, but the apps of Nike are designed to suit the movement of your foot as you run. You create a safe, sock-like fit where you need it and greater breathability and versatility in other areas — all without putting different materials together.
The new cushioning device from Nike debuted at the 2019 Joyride Run. To absorb shocks, the shoe uses four pods filled with TPE beads that compress. The pouches are covered in SR02, a super-soft foam that helps smooth the gaps between the pouches (usually too soft to use in shoes). While special, Nike isn’t the first to build a beads-in-pouches system— Puma created a similar model in 2017—and we found that the Joyride provides a superior output at a steep price.
